January 24, 2010
One of my questions for St. Luke is: how did this Scripture passage come up in the synagogue? Was it assigned or did Jesus pick it out?
It says so much about the ministry of Jesus. His audience includes the oppressed, the captives, the blind, and the poor. People who are hurting need a physician.
Sometimes an event like the earth quake in Haiti brings us face-to-face with suffering. Granted that there is a physical distance between us. But the reality can hit home.

SACRAMENT AND SOUP - February 11th 2010
On Thursday, February 11, we will pray the Sacrament of Healing (Anointing of the Sick), followed by our annual Soup Fest. The Anointing Mass will begin at 11 AM in church, followed by lunch in Stingle Hall. The lunch will consist of a choice of three different soups, fresh homemade bread, dessert and choice of beverage. You are welcome to attend either or both events, but YOU MUST REGISTER ASAP! Please call the parish office (722-4914) and let us know if you are planning to attend either or both events. (We cannot accept reservations after February 5). This will be our last luncheon this season so please come and share in the blessings of our parish family.
Seamless Garment
In his own approach to these questions about social justice, Cardinal Bernadin used the image of the seamless garment. The soldiers did not cut up the garment beneath the cross. It was of one piece.
Following this image, Cardinal Bernadin reminded us that we face many questions in society about right and wrong. Rather than judge that one question is more important than another, he encouraged us to take a broad view. But all these must have their foundation in a fundamental understanding of the sanctity of human life.
The effort one group brings to the question of abortion is as valid as the effort another brings to the question of immigration, or national health insurance, or just war, or discrimination. Try always to see the big picture.
Special Collection for Haiti
It was encouraging to have people stop me before Mass last weekend to ask if we were doing anything special for victims from the earthquake in Haiti. There was genuine concern about them and about our ability to respond. The special collection that day was over $5,300. Other money continues to come to the office to augment our offering.
We support the outreach of Catholic Relief Services which is already in place. They bring effective aid to the people and have minimal administrative costs involved in their work.

A NOTE FROM THE NUN
A little boy was waiting for his mother to come out of the grocery store. As he waited, he was approached by a man who asked, "Son, can you tell me where the Post Office is?" The little boy replied, "Sure, Just go straight down this street a coup of blocks and turn to your right." The man thanked the boy kindly and said, "I'm the new pastor in town. I'd like for you to come to church on Sunday. I'll show you how to get to heaven!" The little boy replied with a chuckle, "Awww, come on…You don't even know the way to the Post Office."

Remember to stop at the Winter Brake table after Mass and check with the committee. They have attendance tickets and raffle tickets available. Take time to find out about this event. Our hope is always within the $35,000 to $40,000 range, on the same level as our summer Roundup.
Also, we mentioned two projects that are beyond the scope of our budget: enhancing our sound system for those with hearing impairments and converting our bathrooms with more automated devices that are more sanitary and help control our use of water.
Several donations have come in and we have over $2,000 in each of these funds. Thank you for these first steps.
SPECIAL NEEDS COLLECTION
Our first quarterly special needs collection in 2010 will occur at all Masses on January 23 and 24. It will benefit E.S.T.H.E.R., the ecumenical alliance here in our area...St. Gabriel continues to be a member parish of this faith-based effort to build community and work in the public arena for the common good of all. The five current action committees are advocating for treatment instead of prison in non-violent drug and alcohol offenses, education funding reform, comprehensive immigration reform, provision of “workforce housing,” and health care revision.
E.S.T.H.E.R. aims for social justice by addressing the systemic changes needed to empower people at all economic levels to live better lives.
We appreciate the generous support you’ve given our participation in E.S.T.H.E.R.’s goals in the past and thank you in advance for the financial help you are able to provide in the second collection.
St. Gabriel Social Concerns Committee
One of our high school juniors will participate in a spring break mission trip to the Dominican Republic. To help defray the cost of this mission trip she will be selling candy bars for $1 in the back of church after Masses the next several weekends. Please support her endeavor.
JOBLESS? WE CAN HELP!
Do we have a deal for you! St. Gabe's could use your help. We need some folks who are willing to make desserts or salads for funeral luncheons. If you are willing to serve on a team, please call Sister JoAnn at 722-4914. We will call on you maybe 3 or 4 times a year.
The other ministry that could use your help is the Funeral Choir. You don't have to have a marvelous voice--just a caring heart. (Well, a little voice would be helpful but not absolutely necessary.) This ministry is extremely helpful to grieving families. If you are willing to give it a try, call Sister JoAnn at 722-4914.
